4 June 2007, Hong Kong: The Faldo Series Asia 2007 will get underway in Shenzhen, China when Mission Hills Golf Club hosts the second China championship on July 25 – 26.
In a bid to develop tomorrow’s champions, many of southern China’s leading young golfers, boys and girls aged 12 – 21, will experience 36 holes under strict tournament conditions on the highly-acclaimed Faldo course, while off the course they will receive expert advice from a guest speaker. Local children will also be invited to receive free coaching and watch the players in action as part of Nick Faldo’s drive to simultaneously increase access to the sport at a grass-roots level.
Up to six leading players from the China championship will be rewarded with the opportunity to learn from Faldo – a six-time Major winner – at the Faldo Series Asia grand final, back at Mission Hills on December 12 – 14. There they will hope to follow in the footsteps of the 2006 champion, 18-year-old Nakarin Ratanakul of Thailand, whose victory earned him a game with Faldo, a place in the Faldo Series grand final in Europe and, courtesy of the Asian Tour, a start in the Volvo Masters of Asia and a scholarship to stage one of Asian Tour qualifying school.
Supported by Mission Hills, The R&A and UBS, the China championship is the first of 11 Faldo Series Asia events in 2007 in nine different countries, including three in China plus one in each of Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and UAE.
Commented Faldo: “After such a successful 2006 grand final at Mission Hills, it is fitting that the ‘home of the Faldo Series Asia’ should host the first event of 2007.
